Psalm 36:2
ESV:
For he flatters himself in his own eyes that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.
NIV:
For in his own eyes he flatters himself too much to detect or hate his sin.
It seems that this verse could be understood that the wicked man flatters himself to the point that he can't even sense his own sinfulness. ...thinking so highly of oneself that one's own sin can't even be recognized ...we do think we're awfully good people.. don't we

Agreed. Somehow we think we're really good people deep down. Sure, we might do bad things, maybe even sinful things, but we're basically good. We often try to console ourselves by saying "well, God looks at our hearts" as if that doesn't make me even more guilty!
When Jesus summarized the heart of the Law as loving God and then man (Matt. 22:34-40), that shouldn't cause us to breathe a sigh of relief, thinking that we don't have a rigorous law to live up to anymore, just an exhortation to love God. Quite the reverse is true. We don't love God. We don't love our neighbour. We love ourselves. Rather than being a safe haven from our evil, our hearts are the root of our evil (Jer. 17:9; Acts 8:22). Jesus Himself affirms this in Matthew 5:21-30. Here He shows us how our hearts are guilty of evil, even if our bodies don't carry out that evil.
Indeed, as evil as our actions are, they are actually better than the intentions of our heart.
Praise be to God who has mercy on those who repent and believe in Him!
